Soho International no1

04/03/23 Blog post #1

Last year I was fortunate enough to purchase a chap of about my age’s complete collection of men’s mags. We exchanged a few e-mails, sorted out a very fair price and I emptied the car and set off for a 2 hour drive to collect. Thats the trouble with bulk lots of mags… they are heavy and expensive to send via courier.

My contact had bought then all himself over the years, probably from the early 70’s onwards and they had been stored in his garage. Now he was moving house and needed to shift them. We had a really pleasant chat, he was very open about how he bought them on his travels for work in Europe. I met his wife who was very cool about it, I loaded up and set off for home.

Most of my collecting to date has been earlier ‘pocket mags’ from the 30’s through to the 60’s plus a few Mayfairs, Playboys etc. Some of this collection were quite ‘hardcore’ for their time and there were many titles that I had never heard of. I bought some archive boxes and set about getting them in order.

Men’s mags aren’t easy to sell on the ‘net. I set up a new profile on eBay rather than mix the mags with other everyday items I sell, but after a few removals and short bans I earned a permanent ban. Mayfair, Playboy it seems are fine, but not something like Fiesta. No logic to it and inconsistently applied.

A couple of night ago while I was ‘refreshing my memory’ of what I have in stock, I thought it might be interesting to review a few of the lesser known titles and show a bit of content. …. now where to begin?

Perhaps SOHO International magazine would be a good place to start. Issue No1 was in my collection with a few later issues. Issue 1 proudly states ‘ Incorporating Flirt’ which I always knew as an American Title with a very pinup artwork style cover. SOHO as the name suggests is a UK publication.

At first glance it looks very 1960’s but was prices in decimal at 30p so it must be mid 1970’s. Issue 1 is 62 pages in Black and White with a good smattering of colour. The girls are all attractive and slim and photography is very much of its time. Its just under A4 in size and boasts an international theme in its contents ( and girls )
